Description
This part replaces the default underbody piece on HO scale Walthers Trainline F40PH models with one correct for GMD F40PH-2Ds It may also work for the Walthers Mainline F40PH
The GMD F40PH-2D was manufactured in the mid to late 1980s for one company, VIA Rail Canada. 59 examples were built, numbered 6400-6458. One of the notable differences between the GMD F40PH-2D and it’s EMD counterparts was the larger fuel tank. All of the components were moved around, some significantly, and the equipment box spanned the width of the locomotive instead of just being on one side.
We have attempted to recreate this as closely as possible, however, it should be noted that we had to make some sacrifices to maintain printability and structural integrity, while also allowing it to fit with the existing model. A prime example is the trough carved in the top for the motor mount and to fit against the main frame/weight of the locomotive. Another is the air bladder brackets, which are thicker so that they do not break.
The fuel tank included is our 1500 imperial gallon tank, and the equipment box is also available separately.
We have also included small divots as pilot holes for air lines, along with the ribbed hose from the aft air bladder (The forward ribbed hose is not included as this can be modelled with a guitar string or piano string). All in all, though, we believe this is a reasonably accurate substitute that modellers can use to upgrade their Walthers F40PH model.
Some sanding of this part may be required to allow it to sit correctly on the frame, and some grinding of the frame in the area of the ribbed air hose will also be necessary.
